The sticker price is never the whole price. Here's what gets added when you buy a vehicle and register it in Bay County, so you can check the numbers on your buyer's order.
Sales tax: 6% state plus 1% county on the first $5,000
Florida charges 6% sales tax on the vehicle's price. Bay County adds a 1% discretionary surtax, but by Florida law the surtax only applies to the first $5,000 of a single item — so the county part of the tax on a car is never more than $50.
The tax is based on the county where the buyer registers the vehicle, not where the dealership is.
Example: a $25,000 vehicle
- State sales tax: 6% × $25,000 = $1,500
- Bay County surtax: 1% × $5,000 = $50
- Total sales tax: $1,550
If you have a trade-in, Florida generally taxes the price after the trade-in credit, which can lower the tax noticeably. Check that your buyer's order shows it that way.
Tag and title if the vehicle is new to Florida
If the vehicle has never been titled or registered in Florida, the Bay County Tax Collector estimates the title and registration cost at about $420, plus any sales tax due. Most of that is Florida's $225 initial registration fee, which applies the first time a vehicle gets a Florida plate. Nonresident active-duty military can have that fee waived.
If you're transferring a plate you already own to the new vehicle, the cost is usually much lower.
Dealer fees
Most Florida dealers also charge a dealer or documentation fee, and the amount varies a lot from dealer to dealer. It's legal, but it's part of what you pay — so always compare offers using the out-the-door price, not the advertised price.
